The Number Nobody Said Out Loud

18 August 2026

Somebody mentioned a number to me in passing once. It took me a while to understand what it had just told me.

I had stayed somewhere much longer than I should have. Not because I could not see it. Because I was too far inside the work to look up.

You become the one who fixes things. The trusted one. The person they call when something is going wrong at ten at night. It is a good feeling, and genuinely useful, and it quietly becomes the whole basis on which you understand yourself there.

What I never did was step back and ask what it was costing.

Then that number, and afterwards what I heard a few peers were making. While I had been being loyal and dependable, I had fallen a long way behind the market. That gap helped me when I finally moved. It did not give me back the years of savings I never made.

Here is the part I think about now. The problem was not that I did not know. It was that I never said it out loud to anybody, so it never quite became real.

I priced myself very differently after that. But getting there took longer than it should have, and most of that time was spent not talking to anyone about it.

That is the thing about the decisions that matter most in a career. They rarely need advice. They need one honest conversation where you finally hear yourself say the thing you have been avoiding.

The first conversation is on me. Fifteen minutes, confidential, no commitment.
