What Holds You Back Early On
I have watched people in their first few years get stuck on something they could not see.
The frustration is always at work. The recognition that did not come. The increment that went to someone with less to show for it. It is real, and they are usually right that they have earned more than they got.
What is harder to see is that the thing holding them back is often not the work at all. It is something next to it. A way of putting things across in a room. A habit of going quiet when it matters.
And underneath that there is usually something else entirely. Pressure at home about what they should be doing with their life by now. Arguments that turn out to be about something else. A head so full by the end of the day that there is nothing left to work on themselves with.
None of it gets said in one place, so none of it gets seen properly. At work you talk about work. At home you defend yourself. Nobody gets the whole picture, including you.
The people I have seen come out of this did not get told what to do. They worked it out when they finally said the whole of it out loud, to someone who was not judging any of it and was never going to repeat a word of it.
That is worth doing early, when it is still one difficult stretch and not something you have got used to.
